Mode Of Action	Ethambutol inhibits arabinosyl transferases that is key in cell wall biosynthesis and by so doing the bacterial cell wall complex production is inhibited resulting increased permeability of the cell wall.
Drug Indication	TB in conjuction with other anti-tuberculous drugs.
Precautions	Must be used together with other anti-TB drugs, pregnancy, impaired renal functions. If dose is more than 15mg/kg BM visual acuity test is to be done monthly.
Contra-Indications	Optic neuritis.
Side Effects	Anaphylactic reactions, dermatitis, optic neuritis, GI disturbances, malaise, fever, CNS effects, numbness, tingling of extremities due to peripheral neuritis, precipitation of gout, hepatic impairment.
Dosage	Initial treatment: 15mg/kg BM as single dose daily. Patients who have received previous anti-TB treatment: 25mg/kg BM OD for 60 days, then 15mg/kg BM OD. Dose in children should not exceed 20mg/kg per day due to the risk optic neuritis.
