| Mode Of Action | Ethambutol inhibits arabinosyl transferases that is key in cell wall biosynthesis and by so doing the bacterial cell wall complex production is inhibited resulting increased permeability of the cell wall. |
| Drug Indication | TB in conjuction with other anti-tuberculous drugs. |
| Precautions | Must be used together with other anti-TB drugs, pregnancy, impaired renal functions. If dose is more than 15mg/kg BM visual acuity test is to be done monthly. |
| Contra-Indications | Optic neuritis. |
| Side Effects | Anaphylactic reactions, dermatitis, optic neuritis, GI disturbances, malaise, fever, CNS effects, numbness, tingling of extremities due to peripheral neuritis, precipitation of gout, hepatic impairment. |
| Dosage | Initial treatment: 15mg/kg BM as single dose daily. Patients who have received previous anti-TB treatment: 25mg/kg BM OD for 60 days, then 15mg/kg BM OD. Dose in children should not exceed 20mg/kg per day due to the risk optic neuritis. |
